There are more than 9.1 million lawful permanent residents (LPRs) eligible to apply for naturalization. According to USCIS, 12.9% of the citizens naturalized in FY 2020 lived in Florida, with 79,800 approved naturalizations throughout Florida and 17,900 approved in Miami alone. From FY 2015 to FY 2019, Florida was the third leading state where naturalized citizens resided (11.4%).
Many of these eligible LPRs may be your current or former clients!
LPRs married to US Citizens are eligible for citizenship after 3 years and all others are eligible after 5 years… this means that all of your I-485s based on marriage approved before August 2019 are eligible!

This information was obtained from the 22 new fact sheets on the naturalization process USCIS released in May 2022 based on research on the green card population in select cities. These fact sheets are one of the many initiatives USCIS has undertaken to encourage naturalization and support the implementation of Executive Order 14012: Restoring Faith in Our Legal Immigration System and Strengthening Integration and Inclusion Efforts for New Americans.
USCIS has released “Eligible to Naturalize” Factsheets for four (4) Florida counties: Pasco County, Lake County, Orange County, and Hillsborough County.
USCIS also recently released an “Eligible to Naturalize Factsheet: Miami” on September 2, 2022.
USCIS is also a part of the Interagency Strategy for Promoting Naturalization, publicly released on July 2, 2021, which provides that a number of US government agencies work together to strengthen inclusion in our country by committing to the following goals and outcomes:
- Raising awareness to the importance of citizenship;
- Promoting civic integration and inclusion;
- Providing immigrants with opportunities and tools to become fully engaged citizens;
- Building community capacity to prepare immigrants for citizenship;
- Eliminating sources of fear and other barriers that prevent individuals from accessing available naturalization services; and
- Advancing and ensuring equity through out the citizenship and naturalization process, including on the basis of race, disability, language access, natural origin, gender, gender identity, and sexual orientation, and providing support to traditionally underserved communities
